FOUR more years of parking chaos is predicted at Glan Clwyd Hospital.
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is looking at a “number of measures” to ease car park congestion at the Bodelwyddan hospital after calls to improve the “nightmare” traffic situation.

A health board spokesperson said: “We recognise that the pressure on car parking at Glan Clwyd Hospital has increased over recent months, and would like to apologise to patients and visitors who have been frustrated when trying to find a place to park.

“This is partly due to the increased clinical activity at the hospital and partly because of the major programme of building work that is taking place. We know that these pressures will continue for the remaining four years of the hospital redevelopment project and therefore we are seeking ways to offer more accessible parking on site.”

North Wales AM Mark Isherwood suggested a ticketing system similar to that in Wrexham Maelor hospital to limit drivers’ stay times.

He said: “The current situation at Glan Clwyd is totally unacceptable and the Health Board must take action to remedy the problems, which seem to have arisen since the abolition of car parking charges at the site. From what I have been told by constituents – and in my own experience - the system at the Maelor is working better than the situation at Glan Clwyd.”

Hospital visitor Sandra Baldwin said: “It’s getting worse everytime I go to try and find a space, you have to allow an hour before your appointment time to ensure you don’t miss it.

“For a lot of people, going to the hospital is stressful enough without adding the problem of nowhere to park.I just hope I can find a space when I’m in labour.”
Another visitor, Wendy Annesmith, said: “The car park is full, it’s a nightmare.
“I have to wait one hour for a spot each week.”

The health board has said it is considering  changes to visiting and clinic times, the introduction of short and long stay areas and, in the longer term, specific staff car-share parking, a park and ride service and to create more parking spaces.

However, plans to build 1,700 houses, a care home and a hotel in Bodelwyddan could apply additional stress on the hospital, North Wales AM Llyr Gruffydd has said.

Bodelwyddan resident Andrew Nicol said: “Delays and congestion are already bad at peak times and a new road is planned that is to serve a large residential and industrial development.Ambulances, emergency vehicles, deliveries of blood transfusion and urgent supplies may encounter unacceptable delays.“
