Garry Daltry

A MEMORIAL event for a Prestatyn High School teacher who died on New Year’s Day raised hundreds of pounds for charity.

Garry Daltry, 64, of Plas Avenue, Prestatyn, was found on the town’s seafront near the Beaches Hotel just after 1am on Wednesday, January 1.

Hundreds of former pupils, friends, family and colleagues crammed the Prestatyn Cons Club on Friday to celebrate the “witty and popular” science teacher, raising more than £700 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Organiser Gemma Lawman said: “It was really lovely.

“The entertainment was fantastic and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

“The school actually brought along his old science and teaching equipment for us all to see and we wrote inside a memory book for him.”

Organisers said they had been inundated with offers of help and donations.

More than 700 raffle tickets were sold on the night.

The physics and science teacher taught at Prestatyn High from 1973 to 2008.

He will be remembered by his wife Linda, whom he met almost 40 years ago, and their two sons Peter and Andrew.

Mrs Daltry said: “His great sense of humour always made life easier.

“He spread his love of life and humour to all who met him.

“The response to his sudden death has proved how well loved and respected he was in the town and all the cards and kind words have been very much appreciated by his family.”

Prestatyn High School teacher Phil Pearce said: “Many at school forged strong friendships with him and his family.

“He was a very capable and well-liked teacher and his sense of humour and quick wit made him popular with both the young people in his charge and his colleagues.”

Some of his former pupils took to Facebook to pay tribute to the “great guy” and “lovely man” he was.

Arran James Pullen said: “RIP Mr Daltry, you were a cracking science teacher.

“Many decent memories of my first few years at Prestatyn High School with you as one of my teachers.”
