TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular market trader who spent more 30 years in the trade.
Michael Barrett, known as Mick, died on October 6 after a heart attack aged 70 and his funeral was held at St Joseph’s Church, Colwyn Bay on October 19.
Mr Barrett, who lived in Colwyn Heights, worked on Prestatyn market for 31 years running a ladies fashion store.
He had also worked on markets in Colwyn Bay, Bangor and Llangefni.
His son Carl, 33, said: “Dad was always up for a laugh. He was a very popular man and was a real character, he was one of a kind.
“I have had customers break down in tears when I’ve told them the news.”
Mr Barrett is also survived by his wife of 38 years Vivian, his five daughters and nine grandchildren.
Carl said: “He loved going out with his family and friends. The family is devastated by his loss. He was a real family man.
“He worked hard for his family and was very popular with the other market traders.”
Mr Barrett was a keen golfer being a member of Rhos and Old Colwyn golf clubs and had also played squash.
He had worked in the merchant navy and had been a factory manager before opening up his market stall.
Carl, who has taken over his father’s store, said: “I want to keep the stall going in his memory. He was my role model and an inspiration.
"He loved Prestatyn he would never have given it up. He had a lot of friends in the town.”
