PRESTATYN is blooming after being named the greenest coastal town in the UK.
The seaside resort has triumphed over established destinations such as Great Yarmouth, Cleethorpes and Bournemouth to win Britain in Bloom’s costal category of towns with a population of more than 12,000.
Judges for the competition, which aims to foster civic pride, environmental responsibility and improve people’s quality of life through community involvement, visited the town in August.
Prestatyn councillor James Davies, chairman of the Prestatyn in Bloom Committee, said: “This year, Prestatyn has looked fantastic and our win in Britain in Bloom is something to truly shout about. It will help attract visitors and more investment to our town but also acknowledges the tireless work that community groups, businesses, the councils and schools carry out in our area. Thank you to all involved.
“Over the coming months and years, it’s vital that we keep up the momentum to achieve yet more for the town.”
Last year Wales in Bloom named the resort the winner of the Town Category which led to its inclusion in the Britain in Bloom competition.
Rachael Seaman, Prestatyn community events and town support officer, has been involved with the commitee for the last five years.
She said: “Seeing the improvement to our town year on year provides us with the enthusiasm to continue despite the hard work and sleepless nights.
“It illustrates that if everyone pulls together we can really put Prestatyn on the map and make a difference to our town for both residents and visitors alike.
“The support we have received from a large variety of community groups including Prestatyn and District Environmental Association, Friends of the Ffrith, The Allotment Club, the Schools, Prestatyn Youth Club and many more has been tremendous.”
The town also bagged the Outstanding Achievement Awards for both community involvement and the involvement of young people.
Rachel added: “This year the support from the businesses has been outstanding with shops dressing their windows, putting out floral displays, balloon displays and making cupcakes for judges.”
