A FORMER Rhyl curate is to return to the town after ten years to become the new Vicar of Rhyl.

Rev Andy Grimwood, 44, a married man with two children, spent several years in Rhyl before being appointed to the position of Vicar of Newtown in the Montgomery Deanery in 2004.

He is now set to succeed his old Vicar, Canon John Glover, who recently retired after 42 years in the ministry.

Mr Grimwood, who will take up the post in the autumn, said: “It is great news that I have got the role. I’m very excited.

“I have fond memories of my time in the parish. It was a good time.

“It is going to be good to renew old friendships and make new ones.”

Mr Grimwood’s appointment from the Bishop of St Asaph, the Right Reverend Gregory Cameron, was read out to the congregation at services in St Thomas’s, Holy Trinity with St Johns and St Anns, churches on Sunday morning.

Following the Bishop’s statement, Rev D Quentin Bellamy, Vicar of Prestatyn, who was conducting the service at St Thomas’s in his role as Area Dean, said he was certain a warm welcome would await Mr Grimwood when he took up his post in Rhyl, probably sometime in September.

“We are delighted he will be coming back to the St Asaph Deanery and I have no doubt that the parishioners of Rhyl will feel the same way,” he added.

A senior parishioner who recalled Mr Grimwood’s earlier ministry in the town, said: “He was always seen as a devoted and widely-respected curate with a strong sense of Christian duty and his return is sure to be universally acclaimed.”

Mr Grimwood said: “I would like to attract more people to our churches and make the church a visible presence in the community.
