Health Minister Lesley Griffiths replaced by Cardiff West AM

WREXHAM AM Lesley Griffiths has been replaced as Health Minister by Professor Mark Drakeford.

The Welsh Government has confirmed the reshuffle this afternoon (Thursday).

It is unclear if Mr Drakeford, AM for Cardiff West, could now decide to call in the decision over the controversial health care shake up launched by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB).

Ms Griffiths has been appointed new Local Government Minister.

Earlier this year BCUHB approved plans to move care for the sickest babies from Glan Clwyd Hospital and high level intensive neonatal care from Wrexham Maelor Hospital to Arrowe Park, the Wirral.

Earlier this month health watchdog Betsi Cadwaladr Community Health Council decided not to refer the decision over neonatal care to then health minister Ms Griffith, but did raise concerns about the proposal.

Last week First Minister Carwyn Jones said he could step in and look again at the plans taking the decision away from Ms Griffiths as she has a constituency in the health board's area.

Ms Griffiths took the role of Minister for Health and Social Services after the 2011 election.

Health campaigners upset about the proposals have previously made calls for BCUHB chief executive Mary Burrows and Ms Griffiths to resign over the plans.
