Concerns raised over equipment after closure

A PATIENTS group has raised concerns over where its equipment will go after the closure of Prestatyn Community Hospital.

Prestatyn Hospital League of Friends has raised £52,000 in the past ten years; donating a range of equipment to the hospital including a bladder scanner, specialist beds and mattresses and televisions.

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board closed the hospital earlier this month as part of a wave of service cuts aimed at saving £65 million.

David Morris, 71, chair of the League of Friends, said he met with health officials last week.

He said: “We have purchased equipment totalling tens of thousands of pounds.

“We purchased a balder scanner that we could donate to St Kentigern Hospice.

“That will benefit the people from the community.

“We are concerned about where all this equipment will go.”

Mr Morris is part of the North Wales Health Alliance group which was set up to oppose the cuts and is now looking to launch a judicial review into the closure.

A 30-bed community hospital to cover North Denbighshire is set to be built on the site of the Royal Alexandra Hospital, although funding has yet to be secured.

Mr Morris said: “There is a dialogue. They are going to write to us and say what they want to do with the equipment and then we are going to write back and say what we would like to do with it.

“The money was raised by the people in the Prestatyn for the people in the area.”

A health board spokesman said: “We are extremely grateful to the League of Friends for their support of the hospital over the years and the funds they have raised to purchase equipment. All the equipment purchased as a result of their generous contributions will continue to be used for the benefit of patients in the area, and we are currently looking at where and how this equipment can best be utilised.”
