A POPULAR man who was “surrounded by love” died last week after suffering with heart complications.

Paul Sugarman, of Kinmel Bay, passed away at the age of 82 surrounded by family at St Kentigern Hospice on February 19.

Mr Sugarman, also known as ‘Mr Paul’ worked as a shopkeeper for many years at the former Army and Navy store on Queens Street in Rhyl, which opened up in the early 1960’s.

Mr Sugarman leaves  his partner of 30 years Gill Bould, daughter Sara Sugarman, and son Mark Sugarman, after suffering with heart complications for two years.

“Everyone knew him,” said Sara. “He was surrounded by love.

“He will be missed terribly by everyone.

“There are lots of memories of the town and how it was and he was at the centre of things.

“He was a very important and popular person in Rhyl.”

Film director, Sara, added that despite her father’s illness he was able to remain at home due to the support he received.

She said: “It was thanks to Gill that he was able to stay at home, and all the support he received from the Marie Curie nurses.”

Mr Sugarman grew up on Terrance Avenue after moving to the area at the age of three, going on to attend Christchurch Primary School and Rhyl County School.

As well as being a business man in the town for around 50 years, Mr Sugarman served his National Service, and remained part of the RAF association for many years, and he was also part of the Holocaust Memorial Society.

A memorial service will be held to celebrate the life of Mr Sugarman, and the family has welcomed all who would like to pay their respects to join them at the service, which will take place at St Thomas’ Church on Friday, March 1, from 3pm.

The family has requested no flowers, but they will be collecting donations in aid of St Kentigern Hospice and the British Heart Foundation.
