TOWYN and Kinmel Bay could be on track for a new train station.

More than £20 million of UK Government funding has been earmarked for new stations to be built in smaller towns.

Calls have now been made for North Wales regional transport consortium TAITH and Conwy County Council to make a funding bid for a station which could boost tourism.

Clwyd West AM Darren Millar said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Towyn and Kinmel Bay and it is important that it is grasped with both hands.

“Currently those travelling to and from Towyn and Kinmel Bay have to use stations in Pensarn or Rhyl, which is far from ideal. I am sure if there was a station on their doorstep more residents of Towyn and Kinmel Bay would use the train.

“Having a station at this point on the North Wales coast would provide long-term benefits to visitors wanting to reach these important tourism destinations and help boost the economy. It would also help the environment by making it easier for local residents and visitors to switch from road to rail.”

Local authorities, train operating companies and developers are being encouraged to apply for the funding which will go towards construction costs of building new stations by February 25.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin MP said: “We recognise that local communities are often best placed to deliver their own transport solutions and I would therefore encourage anyone with a credible and worthwhile business plan to apply for this vital extra funding.”

Applications will be assessed by a cross-industry panel, including representatives from Network Rail and the Department for Transport, with an announcement on successful bids made in the summer.
