Marine Lake has been given a Green Flag Award

RHYL’S Marine Lake has been given a prestigious Community Green Flag Award.

The attraction on Wellington Road was presented with the national honour recognising high quality green spaces in the UK thanks to partnership working by the Marine Lake Users Forum and Denbighshire Council.

Ian Olson Coastal, facilities officer responsible for the site, said: “This award demonstrates where the council, working in collaboration and partnership with community groups, is able to improve facilities and make a positive impact in the local area.

“Marine Lake Users Forum is an active group that works hard to promote and improve the Marine Lake site, which enhances that which is already provided by Denbighshire Council.”

Betty Smith, Secretary of the Users Forum, said: “We are really pleased to have achieved this award for Marine Lake and it demonstrates the hard work the group has undertaken at the site.

“Along with the preparations for being part of the Wales in Bloom and Britain in Bloom judging route, we have also recently gained funding to install a new children’s play area and an interactive Environmental Trail and this award shows what can be achieved by working in partnership.”

A public consultation is being held on plans to transform Marine Lake into a watersports centre of excellence.

Rhyl Going Forward has drawn up plans to install a cableski system, shower and changing rooms and year-round sailing at the iconic Rhyl attraction.

It is expected new facilities would allow Rhyl Yacht Club, Rhyl Sea Cadets, Ocean Beach Waterski Club and Rhyl Waterski Club, to make more use of the lake.
