Steve Fox in his glory days

AN emotive appeal for TV footage has gone out to football fans from the family of a Racecourse legend who is battling cancer.

The family of Steve Fox say his condition is weakening and believe the footage would help to lift his spirits.

Steve, 54, who made more than 140 appearances for the Reds, now lives in Tamworth and is battling cancer which has spread throughout his body, including his brain, heart, liver, lungs and spine.

His wife Helen said she thinks it would raise his spirits if they could see TV highlights of Steve in his pomp when he played for Wrexham with such distinction.

“Steve talks about matches against the likes of Chelsea and we used to record games which were shown on television,” said Helen.

“Unfortunately the videos went missing some time ago, probably when we moved house, but it would be great if there is someone in Wrexham who has taped any fixtures showing Steve playing for the club who could lend them to us.

“Steve is weakening and it would mean so much if we could see these games again. I really think it would help to lift his spirits.”

In June the Leader reported Steve had been diagnosed with cancer and Helen said that in the last few weeks he has been getting gradually weaker.

“He can hardly walk at all now and sleeps a great deal. He currently has an infection of the lung. His breathing is bad, he has pain in his chest and back.”

Steve and Helen have two sons – Matthew, 31 and Daniel, 25.

Helen said it would be wonderful if their children, now grown up, could see films of Steve when he was at the very top of his game.

Steve played for Wrexham in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

“If someone has TV footage of Steve they could lend us we would return it to them as soon as we could. It might even be possible to get it converted on to DVD,” she added.

Doctors told Steve if his cancer was untreated he would only have six months to live.

He tried medication which could have prolonged his life for two years, but had to come off the drug due to severe side effects.

If anyone can help the Fox family they can get in touch with them through the Leader by ringing 01978 355151.
