PROTESTERS have staged a rally against controversial proposals to build on green belt land surrounding Chester.

Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWaC) claims 2,000 homes need to be built on green field sites to meet housing demand while Bell Developments have submitted plans for a huge student village on green belt land between Blacon and Mollington.

Both proposals have been met with fierce criticism with opponents claiming that building on the green belt threatens to destroy the city’s character.

Campaigners fighting to protect the green belt gathered on land near the proposed student village site in an attempt to show the strength of feeling against the proposals.

Chester MP Stephen Mosley and former MP Christine Russell joined the rally with The Friends of North Chester Green Belt and representatives from the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), Chester Civic Trust and the Green Party.

A spokesman for The Friends of North Chester Green Belt said: “At this point we need to say that we are not against regeneration, indeed we feel it is essential if tourists are to be attracted back to our city.

“What we are against is ‘developer-led’ inappropriate development which would not only harm our city but is also not needed.”

Mr Mosley has previously confirmed his opposition to the proposed student village and also objects to the plans to build homes in the green belt.

He has now submitted more than 750 letters from constituents opposing the housing plans.

Mr Mosley said: “It is great that we have had so many responses from local Chester residents to the council’s proposals.

“While I am broadly supportive of the council’s plans, I am vehemently against the release of green belt land around Chester, which does so much to ensure our historic city maintains its unique identity.

“It is only because the council has made a choice to aim for a target which is ‘greater than local need’ that any green belt release is deemed necessary.

“This choice does not in itself justify the ‘very special circumstances’ that are required for green belt release.”
