THE project manager of a youth centre that has become a Rhyl eyesore is committed to completing the building.
John Reaney said it is very important that the Rhyl Youth Action Group (RYAG) building on Wellington Road gets up and running so it can be used for its full potential.
Mr Reaney, who is one of 10 youth workers at the building, also told of his plans for the future and his dedication to deliver more youth work - offering more support and advice to young people in the community.
“We are working tooth and nail to get it finished and get it up and running as it should be,” he said.
“We are concerned the impact it has on the local community the way the building looks - also it doesn’t send out the right message to the young people that we are working with.
“We want them to know that we care about them.”
Mr Reaney is confident that the cash injection of £100,000 from the Welsh Government will be enough to help revamp the building.
“We have appointed Purcell Uk to see us through with the project - I would like to think work will start before Christmas,” he said.
“Something huge would have to go wrong for the work not to be complete by this time next year.”
A spokesman for Purcell, said: “We are looking forward to pushing on with the work and hoping to get the building complete as soon as possible within the new year.”
Mr Reaney said that despite the building not being up to standard, they are still offering a vital service in Rhyl, attracting up to 200 youngsters every week.
“The service we offer is really important for the youngsters - they are not just coming to play games - they receive advice and support with whatever they need.
“Once the building is complete we can use it to its full potential.
“I’m looking at applying for grants to deliver more youth work so we can offer more programmes for young people.
“Once the building is finished our income will increase and we will be able to deliver more youth work.”
The £520,000 project, which received a Welsh Government contribution of £442,000 in 2009, has been left unfinished since February 2011
