Everyone is tightening their belts at the moment. If you are looking for somewhere to save money then lowering your energy bills could be a good place to start. Not everyone is good at cutting back, but some simple changes to your everyday life could mean big savings, what may not seem like a lot each month, all adds up. The following tips may seem obvious; however statistics show most people still do not follow these general rules for saving on energy bills. Follow these top tips and see your energy bills shrink.
1. Turn things off
This is obvious, right? Most of us would agree that this is one of the simplest ways of lowering bills, yet surveys have shown that most people still don’t turn off lights when they leave a room or turn off the tap when they brush their teeth. Simply turning unused appliances off when they are not needed could lead to savings on your energy bill. Similarly, turning appliances off at the main source rather that leaving things on standby or continuously charging, is another simple way to save some money.
2. Lower the temperature
Turning your thermostat down by just 1% can have an effect on your heating bills. Why not try changing the temperatures on the boiler itself? Most boilers have thermostats where you can control the basic temperature of the hot water and heating. If you find your hot water is scalding hot, you should turn the temperature down on the boiler. This means the boiler doesn’t need to work as hard to heat up your hot water. When it comes to laundry, wash your clothes at a lower temperature, many washing machines and washing detergents are designed to work effectively at lower temperatures. Put a jumper on or a hot water bottle in bed instead of giving in to the temptation of turning the heating up.
3. Compare
If you compare energy prices you can see which suppliers are the most suited to you and which are offering the lowest prices and best deals. Many of us have been with the same energy supplier for years because it is what we are used to, or it is a supplier we have always been with. However, if you want to save money, changes must be made. Using a comparison website to see if you could be saving money is an extremely useful and savvy thing to do, especially when some comparison websites claim you could save over £400. Don’t be put off if you are not the most tech-savvy person, comparison websites make the process very simple and finding out that you could be saving money takes only a few minutes.
By following these top tips and thinking a little more about your energy consumption, you will be saving money on your energy bills in no time. Remember, even the smallest changes to your everyday life can make a big difference to your wallet.
