VETERAN soldiers marched through Wrexham to mark 30 years since the end of the Falklands conflict.

The march on Saturday, which also included 24 Welsh Guardsmen who wore bearskins and red tunics, and the regimental band, followed a service of remembrance at St Giles’ Church in which the Rhos Male Voice Choir performed.

Later there was the laying of wreaths at the Falklands War Memorial at Bodhyfryd.

The event was organised by the Wrexham and North Wales branch of the Welsh Guards Falklands War Association and was followed by a reception at the War Memorial Club on Farndon Street.

Thirty two Welsh Guards were among 48 members of the British forces who died when troop ship Sir Galahad was bombed by the Argentines in June 1982.

Among those killed was 22-year-old guardsman Neil Hughes of Rhostyllen.

In 2010 his mother Patricia Hughes collected an Elizabeth Cross at a ceremony in Llandudno to mark his courage.

Among those injured was Caerphilly-born guardsman Simon Weston, who suffered 46 per cent burns to his face which left him barely recognisable.

He has since become a spokesman for those who fought to recapture the islands from Argentina.

The Falkland Islands were liberated from Argentine occupation on June 14, 1982.
