Sex for sale in Denbighshire town centre’s public toilets

TOWN centre public toilets closed amid claims of lewd behaviour between men cruising for sex, have now re-opened.

But scrawls of graffiti saying people can still “call or text for sex” remain on the walls.

The toilets near St Peter’s Square in Ruthin shut to the public last month.

A source, who asked not to be named, told the Free Press at the time that men had been meeting there for sex and that notes relating to sexual behaviour had been left in the toilets.

She said “It’s disgusting. Lots of people have been moaning about it because they’re the only toilets in the centre of town, the only others are at Cae Dol.”

The toilets re-opened over the weekend after refurbishment works but when the Free Press checked on Monday several numbers asking people to call for sex were visible.
Our photographer visited the toilets and photographed the graffiti on the walls.

Most was too graphic and lewd to publish.

But one message is reproduced above, with part of the phone number deliberately edited out.

North Wales Police refused to confirm whether the rumours about sex and the toilets were true but said they were looking into reports of ant-social behaviour there.

Ruthin police sergeant Gareth Pearson said: “We are aware of the issues and are taking measures to tackle the problems.

“These matters are taken very seriously and patrols have been stepped up.

“We are determined to crackdown on this sort of behaviour and local people can rest assured that offenders will be brought to justice.”

District Inspector Gary Kelly added that police were liaising closely with Denbighshire County Council about previous complaints.

Grosvenor Facilities Management (GFM), who manage the toilets, said the closure was due to vandalism.

Lynne McKay from Kent-based GFM said: “Due to vandalism we’re getting the toilets refurbished. They needed to be closed but I’m not at liberty to say anything more about why. We were asked by the local authority to close them.”

A spokeswoman for Denbighshire County Council said the toilets were the responsibility of GFM but that: “Apparently there has been repeated attacks of unsavoury graffiti and damage to the cubicle partitions.”
