CARNIVAL supporters say the county council has “kicked them in the teeth” by omitting them from a brochure.
The organisers behind Prestatyn Carnival say Denbighshire Council has snubbed the flagship summer event, the longest-running of its type in the town, by excluding it from the recently released Rhyl and Prestatyn Funtime brochure.
Joy Williams, chair of the carnival committee, said: “The brochure has completely ignored Prestatyn's Carnival. While the editorial extols the virtues of the Rhyl Air Show, there is no editorial mention of Prestatyn Carnival whatsoever.
“It does not take much imagination to conclude that Denbighshire Council, being organisers of the air show, wish to solely promote their own event on that day, to the exclusion of all else. Considering both Rhyl and Prestatyn are promoted as holiday resorts, I think it is outrageous.”
This follows an outcry from carnival supporters after the Rhyl Air Show dates were moved onto the established carnival weekend.
Glyn Jones, Prestatyn town councillor, said: “I have complained at council meetings in the past about this brochure being unfair to Prestatyn. Certainly this year's edition, by ignoring the carnival, is a good hard kick in the teeth for Prestatyn, and the residents I represent.”
A Denbighshire Council spokeswoman said the Tourism unit puts out an annual statement requesting event organisers to contact them.
“Unfortunately, we can only publish events that we are made aware of. According to the Prestatyn carnival website, the last dates published were for the carnival in 2010. There is no information for a carnival in 2012.
“It is unfortunate that the event has not been included in the Funtime brochure, however, this is just a snapshot of the events happening in and around Rhyl and Prestatyn during 2012. The brochure clearly states that for full information the reader should visit www.eventsnorthwales.co.uk/coastal.”
