Splash of good news for club

MODEL BOAT enthusiasts could soon be charting a course for home with news of their usual sailing spot once again becoming available.

Members of the Colwyn Bay Model Boat Club (CBMBC) complained after their usual winter meeting spot at the boating lake in Eirias Park, Colwyn Bay, was left drained to no more than a foot of water.

During the summer, the club sail at the pond near the civic centre, but this is completely drained during the winter to prevent frost damage to the concrete, leaving the club with only the lake in the park

Alan Woodward, chair of the boat club, said he had spoken to both Conwy County Borough Council and management at the leisure centre, but had been unable to discover why the lake had been drained.

He said: “It’s been used for about 100 to 80 years, and there’s no record of an injury there. We don’t know why they just won’t fill it.”

He added: “After using that lake in winter since time immemorial, we’ve now moved to West Shore in Llandudno, which some of our people have always used - but everybody in the east of the county is having to go further than they used to before.”

A spokeswoman for the council said they would allow the level to rise after a request from the Model Boat Club.

“The boating lake is mainly naturally filled by rainwater and any excess is emptied through valves.

“It is generally kept at a lower level during the winter.”
