RESIDENTS who fled their flats during a Boxing Day fire say their nightmare is not yet over.
Thirteen people were put into emergency accommodation by Denbighshire County Council after fire damaged the house in Wellington Road, Rhyl.
But a council spokesman say they had liased with the fire service who say the house is ‘safe for human habitation’.
Jackie Whittaker, 45, a housekeeper at Bodelwyddan Castle, said she hoped to move out in a few weeks because the situation was “disgusting”.
She said: “We’ve had to move back in, as they’ve finished the ceiling over the stairs. No bannisters have gone up. There are wires sticking out, the walls are still black going up stairs. There’s been no progress done, except for the ceiling.
“I’m gutted. We have to live there. Other people have got children. It’s ridiculous. You can’t bring friends in because they won’t go up the stairs because they don’t feel safe. It’s a mess.”
Elizabeth Hurley has three young children who she said had been left traumatised by the fire.
She said: “We had no choice but to move back in. My two year old has been affected more than the other two. Our smoke alarm went of the other night in the living room. She woke up and she was hysterical. She was shouting for her brother: ‘Lucas, wake up, fire!’."
“I got her to bed and she was shaking head to foot. It took three hours to calm her down.”
Ms Hurley said the effects of the fire had entered their home, which still had black marks on the carpet, and a front window smashed and still not fixed.
