TRIBUTES have been paid to an experienced pilot who lost his life on Wednesday after a light aircraft crashed into a mountain near Welshpool.

Bob Jones died when the twin-engine aircraft came down on Long Mountain, close to Welshpool, at about 12noon on Wednesday, January 18.

The second crash victim, yet to be named, is said to be from the North Wales Police Force catchment area.

"Bob Jones was a genius of the skies," says former Montgomeryshire MP and flying buddy Lembit Opik.

Current MP Glyn Davies adds: "The airport was Bob Jones - without him there would never have been an airport."

Wales Air Ambulance coordinator Ann Lewis, who worked closely with Bob for six years, describes him as "a wonderful man who loved flying".
