Rhyl 22 Abergele 9

RHYL claimed local bragging rights at the weekend with a 22-9 victory against under-strength rivals Abergele at The Waen.

With the visitors arriving without a full complement of front row forwards, the match was played with uncontested scrums which contributed to a scrappy opening, as Gele took the initiative with a pair of early penalties.

Just before the break winger Jack Hughes crossed over in the corner, converted by Rhodri Carlton-Jones, who added a penalty to give Rhyl a 10-6 lead at the interval.

A strong spell saw Rob Tilley and Rhys Edwards add to Rhyl’s lead, but Gele fought back to prevent any further scores and shut out the chance of a bonus point win, adding another penalty to round off the game.

Rhyl travel to Mid-Wales next week to play Cobra and Abergele welcome mid-table Denbigh, with both matches kicking off at 2.30pm.
