WORK has started on a new Rhos on Sea crossing which ends eight years of campaigning by residents.

The crossing, on Church Road and Penrhyn Avenue, will be put in place to the protect pedestrians from motorists who use the route as a short cut between Colwyn Bay and Llandudno.

The campaign to reduce the speed of drivers on the road involved traffic-calming measures and residents armed with radar guns who found motorists travelling at 50 and 60mph along the 30mph stretch.

Lyndsay French, who works at the nearby Ysgol Llandrillo yn Rhos, raised more than £20,000 from community donations to secure the installation of the crossing - with one anonymous business person donating £5,000.

She said: "It's so exciting, this work.

“But I won't believe it's finished until it's done."

Cllr Roger Parry, a representative of Llandrillo yn Rhos, said the success of the campaign was down to the partnership effort between Ms French, the council's highways department and himself.

"If it wasnt for the three of us, it wouldn't have happened,” he said.

Darren Millar, AM for Clwyd West, added: "Once the crossing is up and running it will make the area much safer for children accessing the local schools and residents going about their daily business.”

This is an issue that Conwy County Access Group have been campaigning for over many years, but it has taken so long because of many issues: including problems with underground services (gas, water, telephone etc.) legal requirements regarding traffic regulations as well as finance. So please have sympathy for the CCBC Highways who can't do things as quickly as they (or we) would like.
