CAERWYS 5
SHOTTON STEEL 0

CAERWYS have shown plenty of steel to make progress in a knockout competition.

They romped to a five-goal victory over Shotton Steel to reach the last-four of the Clwyd League (East) premier Cup.

Home boss Steve Allsopp had virtually a full squad to pick from, as Caerwys hadn’t played a game for four weeks.

Rob Marshall kept his place in goal, with Joe Griffith being handed a midfield role.

After a shaky start Caerwys settled down and a good move saw Andrew Swann put the home side ahead after 17 minutes.

The first half was a scrappy affair which was spoiled by a very strong wind.

Caerwys were expecting a tougher second half, but Shotton just couldn't find a way past a very solid back four, with Marshall in excellent form between the sticks.

The introduction of Gareth Rush sparked a bit more life into the Caerwys attack and he was involved in the next four goals.

Adam Lewis volleyed home a great cross after 58 minutes, before Rush then chipped the keeper from 25 yards as the ball went in off the far post.

Rush then crossed from the left wing on 63 minutes and Joe Griffith bundled the ball over the line.

A Rush corner on five minutes from time found Swann, who hammered the ball into the roof of the net from 12 yards.

The result means that Caerwys will now play host to Connah's Quay Tigers in the semi-finals of the Premier Cup.

Meanwhile, Flo Basford of the Misty Waters Bingo Society at Lloc presented £1,000 to club officials Steve Griffith and Phil Wilson in aid of the Caerwys pavilion fund.

The bingo society has made several generous donations to local charities in the last two years.
