WELSHPOOL Football Club could hand a sensational cameo to former England international Matt Le Tissier (right) later this month.

The former Southampton playmaker and Premier League legend is among a host of retired professionals who could line-up for Welshpool, following their mention on Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday last month.

Former Arsenal wideman Paul Merson, ex-Crystal Palace star John Salako and former Chelsea defender Scott Minto are rumoured to be the other Sky Sports pundits in line for a cameo.

Welshpool will host championship chasing Rhayader Town in a re-arranged Spar Mid Wales League One fixture at Maesydre on January 28, when the former pro will make his appearance.

Welshpool manager Dave Jones confirmed the latest development had followed hot on the heels of the club’s mention on the results service, over the festive period.

The club’s 10-1 Boxing Day derby defeat at Waterloo Rovers prompted host Jeff Stelling to first mention the club.

However a week later an email from Jones outlining the club’s fall from grace was read out by the former Countdown host.

Jones said: “Things have really snowballed since Boxing Day and even more since the email was read out on the show.

“When the programme contacted me with their idea of a one off appearance for one of their retired professionals I was surprised.

“A players’ meeting was hurriedly arranged earlier in the week and they cannot wait for the game.

“It is a massive publicity coup for the club and one which I hope will have positive effects for the town as well as the Mid Wales League.

“We are determined to showcase ourselves to the nation which will hopefully attract new sponsors, more committee members and, ultimately, make the club stronger.”
