TOP-of-the-table Rhuddlan Town needed a penalty shoot-out to sink title rivals Meliden after finishing deadlocked on 4-4 after extra-time in their Premier Cup second round second leg thriller.
Leading 3-1 from their home tie, Meliden were rocked by first half goals from Dean Moss and Darren Cassidy to make it 3-3 at the end of normal time. Cassidy then fired Rhuddlan ahead only for Jon Grimley to square the scores and trigger the penalty shoot-out which Rhuddlan just shaded 3-2.
Prestatyn Rovers had no such problems as they crushed hosts Rhyl Athletic 9-2 to finish 16-2 aggregate winners. Jamie Fox-Byrne and Ray Thomas bagged Rhyl’s consolation brace as James Price (2), Jordan Miller (2), David Gray, John Hargreaves, Mark Hughes, Rob Hughes and Gary Higham piled up Rovers sackful.
Abergele Dragons needed the help of a first half own goal to pip Rhos United 3-2 on aggregate in a cliff-hanger at Rhos after shading a 2-1 advantage from the home leg but St Asaph were comfortable 3-0 victors over Llansannan to progress 6-2 on aggregate. Paul Fleming, Seb Walker and Adam Cassidy did the damage after Saints 3-2 away margin.
Prestatyn Rovers produced two hat-trick aces in their 6-2 rout of lowly Halkyn United in the Reserves Combination Division, Martin King and Mark Sweetman monopolising Rovers scoring, but Abergele Dragons were on the receiving end in a 7-0 blitz at Flint Town United Youth.
Anthony Marshall, David Davies (pen) and Chris Hardy transformed a goalless first half with one apiece in Llandyrnog United’s 3-0 win over Penmaenmawr Phoenix but Rhyl were floored 5-1 by invincible leaders Gap Connah’s Quay in the Reserve Premier League, James Stead clawing one back on 87 minutes.
