RHYL HIGH School will be celebrating the London games in style this summer after being chosen to represent Wales in the Olympic torch relay.
The secondary school is four across the UK to take part in the relay on May 29.
Sports teacher Ffion Jones, who nominated Rhyl High, said: “It’s so good for the school, when you hear about things like this it’s always in South Wales and Cardiff, so it’s great for a North Wales school to get a chance.
Ffion, who forefronts the school’s 5x60 sports provision programme, said: “I had to write why the school should be nominated, and then had to do a phone interview with the people from the Olympics last week.
“They told me Rhyl High was one of ten schools in Wales to be nominated, and then on Thursday I found out we’d been picked.
Pupils including national football, wheelchair basketball and roller hockey players will now take part, with the ten participents specially selected for their sporting and educational efforts at Rhyl High.
Claire Armitstead, Headteacher at Rhyl High, said: “There’s plenty of activities being planned to tie in with the Olympics and Paralympics - I’ve just seen some pupils trying out blind football. We’re fully embracing the Olympics here at Rhyl High.”
