Signs unclear claims Flintshire parking fine pensioner

A PENSIONER who paid for a ticket to park his car was shocked to return to a fine.

Dylan Williams, 69, paid £1 for a long stay ticket at New Street car park in Mold, which covered him for nine hours.

But when he returned to his car four hours after first parking he was greeted by a fine for £10.

Only some of the spaces in the Flintshire Council run car park are designated as long stay spaces and Mr Williams, from Dolgellau, had parked in a short stay space.

“If I’d seen the signs I would have parked somewhere else.”

There are notices in the car park telling people which bays are long stay but Mr Williams says they need to be clearer, especially since the ticket printed told him he would be covered for nine hours.

“I genuinely didn’t see the signs,” he said. “It’s crazy, just because I’d gone right instead of left to park they’ve fined me.

“I did a bit of shopping and took my time because I thought I had ages. I feel it’s very mean of Flintshire Council, I’m a law-abiding citizen.

“I’m not going to come to Mold again.”

Neal Cockerton, head of assets and transportation at Flintshire Council said: "New Street Car Park is separated into short and long stay areas and this arrangement is clearly signed at the entrance to the car park.

"The short stay parking area is intended for use by visitors to the town and shoppers ensuring that people requiring all-day parking do not park in the area to the detriment of trade for local businesses.

“The maximum stay in the short stay area is up to three hours.

“All short stay areas have a return prohibited of 30 minutes and this is clearly signed on the instruction panels at each Pay and Display ticket machine.

"Those wishing to stay in New Street Car Park for longer than three hours are required to use the long stay area of the car park.

“The parking information signs sited around the car park show the charges applicable and the conditions related to them and are designed to enable visitors to read the information quickly and with ease.”

Time and Space...space and time....at the very least this gent paid the correct money to park...now Mold traders will be missing one customer due to the overbearing need to control our every action

Time to implement Councillor Sharps declared policy of abolishing car parking charges in Flintshire.

This is the reason I try and avoid Mold. In the past I have driven in and parked for one hour then another member of the family drives in and buys a ticket not realising that the time is the same as my original because same car same number plate. Simple rules.... No..... lost trade.....Yes

How do small towns like Mold survive at all ? not only do they have supermarket competition like other local towns (Shotton for example) but unlike Shotton they also charge to park. Its amazing that anyone goes there, what is there in Mold to draw people to a fine ?

just dont pay the fine, nothing will happen, its a private car park, they will send you a solicitors letter but as the solicitor on watchdog said make a paper plane out of it and ignore it nothing will happen, i followed his advice and sure enough got the letter but nothing else happened, it costs them to much money to follow it up, you only will have to pay if its a police fine

Mold survives because the market draws people in and you can park anywhere as there is no control of on street parking

Neal Cockerton sounds a real JOBSWORTH kinda guy, (the kind that would press the button in a nuclear war without thinking or questioning the order from above), pouring out the council policy dribble these morons hide behind, Mr Williams made a mistake, he wasn't familiar with the area, give him a break Flintshire council!

mr matt.... It's NOT a private car park, it's owned and operated by the Council and they will go to court over non payment of fines. You should be a little more careful with your advice.

Seems very unfriendly of the council - after all Mr Williams paid the correct amount and in error parked in the wrong bay - its not as if he was trying to avoid paying. Why can't we accept that sometimes people make honest mistakes? After all it is not the end of the world. If it matters that much Council should consider whether the signs are clear enough.

The problem is, of course, that if you make an exception for poor old Mr. Williams, then there will be a lot of Mr. Williams' trying it on. I should also say that the signage at the car park really is quite clear.

Crikey a market - are they still going ? I thought the council had done their best to get rid of them all years ago. when I were a lad we had a huge one in Connah's Quay - its a health centre now and I think the rest of the land is ear marked for housing.
