Road closure looms as sewerage set for repair

A ROAD in Saltney will be closed for two weeks while engineers resolve a sewerage problem.

Mainwaring Drive is open to residents and emergency services only while Welsh Water engineers dig to repair a section of the wastewater network.

Saltney councillor Klaus Armstrong-Braun believes the problem lies with subsidence on a roundabout at the junction of Mainwaring Drive and Belmont Drive, which has plagued the area for more than a decade.

It is on this roundabout where workmen began digging on Friday. He said: “Questions need to be asked because I reported problems on this road to Flintshire Council in 1995 and every so often since.

“I was told that nothing was wrong and that they would keep an eye on it and now they’ll have to dig the whole road up to repair it. This could have been prevented.”

A 43-year-old resident, who is a nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital, said she was unhappy about the disruption to her sleep that the roadworks may cause.

She told the Leader: “The workmen have been at that roundabout on and off for years.

“They’ve turned up at 11.30pm before now and started digging while I was trying to get a good night’s rest.

“We’ve had no notice at all that they’re going to be here for two weeks.”
A spokesman for Welsh Water apologised for any inconvenience the work might cause, adding: “We were alerted to a malfunction on the wastewater network on a pipe leading to a property in the Mainwaring Drive area of Saltney Ferry.

“Unfortunately, during work to remedy this issue, some structural damage was caused to a section of the wastewater network in the area.

“After liaising with Flintshire Council, we will be starting to repair the damage and this work will take approximately two weeks to complete.

“To maintain the safety of our work force and members of the public, Mainwaring Drive will be closed for the duration of this work.

“Access for residents and emergency services however will be maintained at all times.

“We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience that our work may cause.”
