A BUSY petrol station was brought to a standstill after a car crashed into the wall of the shop building.

Emergency services rushed to the petrol station forecourt at Sainsbury’s in Wrexham after a male pensioner’s grey Ford Fusion careered into the wall of the main forecourt building yesterday.

The driver managed to walk away with minor injuries, while staff escaped unhurt after the collision in front of where they were serving customers.

Sainsbury’s has apologised for the inconvenience caused to motorists, who were forced to look elsewhere for fuel as the filling station remained closed in the aftermath of the collision.

Wendy Owen, deputy manager of Sainsbury’s Wrexham, said yesterday: “There was a minor accident in our petrol station today but thankfully no-one was hurt.

“Engineers are currently assessing the damage and the petrol station will reopen as soon as possible.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused in the meantime.” A spokesman for the ambulance service said they were called out at 12.27pm.

“One crew was at the scene and one elderly male driver was involved,” said the spokesman.

“The man sustained a thumb injury and minor stomach pain.

“However, he was not conveyed to hospital.”

The man’s car remained lodged against the building wall, which suffered visible damage, for almost an hour before being taken away on a recovery vehicle.

A spokesman for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “A crew from Wrexham fire station attended to make the vehicle safe.”

North Wales Police, who were also called out, said the collision led to an isolated fuel spillage.

Although the petrol station was cordoned off, access to Sainsbury’s supermarket was not affected.

Surely it's about time compulsory retesting was brought in for elderly drivers.

Quite right Roland, because absolutely NO accidents are caused by anyone under the age of 70 are they?

Should this person have a car license?

Just goes to show that accidents can happen anywhere...in this case it was neither speed nor a deadly road at fault...probably a momentary lack of concentration/distraction at the root of it

Roland.... It would be more sensible to retest all drivers on a regular basis. Pfd.....If he satisfies the dot requirements, Yes

truth hurts, the number of accidents involving elderly drivers, as a percentage per age group, is considerably higher than other groups, with the exception of the very young.

"tut-tut"....quite a few negative comments here because the driver is an elderly person. I see that no one has stopped to think that there could have been a defect with the vehicle!!

perhaps he was in a rush to get back home to penyffordd

Roland... Can you quote a reliable scource for your for your accident data for elderly drivers?

  11. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 14:44 on 06 January 2012 Report

I'll see if I can find it, Hd. There was a Times article which quoted the DoT as saying that drivers over 80 had more accidents per mile driven than any other age group.

  12. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 14:48 on 06 January 2012 Report

Sorry, Hd, it was the Telegraph:- http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/road-safety/6613532/Age-concern-time-to-stop-driving.html

Having read your source RC, I can see why you base your statement on it. It's meaningless and futile! It states road safety organisations who say this age group have "an excellent safety record" and you yourself admit they're safer than the "very young". One person of indeterminate age, only described as a 'pensioner' has a minor accident and the whole age group are vilified. Are you Lucien Watkins in disguise?

  14. Posted by: Roland Cleth at 15:38 on 06 January 2012 Report

th, the relevant part of the article is simply that "The DfT...statistics show that drivers over the age of 80 have more accidents per mile than any other age group." And I also had a conversation, similar to that in the article with my late father, as I was concerned that it was becoming increasingly likely that he could kill himself or someone else.

Thanks Roland... The relevant words are "per mile' , your original 08:34 just said " number of accidents" I suspect the over 80's only make relatively short trips in urban areas, the areas where most accidents happen. Lucian Watkins selectively using statistics to support his case.

In my personal experience (just real everyday life rather than any stats from a paper type affair) I have noted that a lot of pensioner accidents tend to be things like this, he probably hit the wall about 5mph where as YooFturbO usually hits another car/tree (see todays headlines) at around 60+ and ends in a fatality. This is of course my own view, not backed up by stats.

the fact was it was a automatic car and the driver fort he had his foot on the brake but it was on the Accelerator.
