RUSSELL Courtney’s late header restored Rhyl’s top of the table status on Bank Holiday monday, securing all three points in a 2-1 win over Buckley Town.

The goal-scoring skipper fired home an 88th minute winner to secure a deserved victory, as Rhyl fought back from going a goal down in the first half.

Manager Greg Strong said: “I’m delighted, it shows what spirit our lads have.”

“They kept going, and it was a game of patience really. Only one side wanted to win it, and I think our keeper only had two saves to make all match.”

Former Rhyl striker Andy Moran put Buckley ahead in the first half, but a barrage of Rhyl pressure finally paid off when Ryan Williams restored parity mid-way through the second half.

The draw would have also put Rhyl top, but Courtney’s late strike sealed all three points, which were no less than Rhyl deserved after dominating the tie from start to finish.

Strong has also signed up a trio of new recruits to boost his side’s title charge over Christmas, with 13 goal Guilsfield striker Will Thomas, influential Llandudno midfielder Danny Hughes and experienced forward Adriano Rigoglioso all making their debuts against Town.

“I’m delighted with the lads to come in,” Strong said. “They’ve shown great commitment - a few of them have taken pay cuts to be here, which just shows that they want to be a part of this.

“We’ve not offered anyone any more money than they’ve had elsewhere.”
