EXTRA beds will be made available at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor to cope with added patient demand this winter.
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board will free up 16 beds in the hospital and relieve pressure on the emergency department as part of a region-wide shake up.
A BCHUB spokesman said: “The expected rise in demand over winter combined with issues with recruitment, staff sickness and the financial position mean that action must be taken to consolidate our services so that can continue to work safely and effectively.”
Four beds will be made available at Ysbyty Eryri in Caernarfon.
The changes will see the BCUHB temporarily close a ward at Ysbyty Bryn Beryl in Pwllheli, and operate its the Minor Injuries Units (MIU) from 9am-5pm on Monday to Friday.
Ysbyty Alltwen in Tremadog will continue to provide a 24 hour, seven day a week minor injuries service.
The move is part of a North Wales-wide reshuffle by the cash-strapped authority, which aims to consolidate it services to maintain safety and effectiveness.
They currently face an overspend of their yearly budget by £6million - but are hopeful that they can return to their £1.2billion limit by the end of the financial year.
The BCUHB spokesman added that UK public service pressures and the global financial situation for the changes.
“We can’t keep trying to do more of what we have always done. We cannot ask our staff to keep working harder and harder and spread themselves ever more thinly.
“The risk is too great to patients, carers and their families, as well as to the staff and such actions will not improve health outcomes,” the spokesman said.
