ARCTIC conditions have caused traffic mayhem for rush hour commuters this morning.

Tailbacks of more than three miles were reported on the A55 eastbound carriageway at Rhuallt Hill after a lorry jack-knifed just after 8am.

Some commuters were stuck for more than an hour while other lorries became stranded on the hill.

On the westbound carriageway police were restricting traffic coming down the hill, causing tailbacks of more than four miles.

Driving plonkers at it as usual - couple of flakes and its chaos time. It was the same last year, all you need to do in the snow is reduce your speed and up your observation. Yet again this morning, snow is coming down road is slushy and morons topping 10-15 mph over the limit (as they do EVERY DAY - I should know I travel 40 miles every day and see it every day) I expect the Deeside industrial estate will be chocker at 5-6pm as some idiot will have gone to fast and hit something/one AGAIN!

lindopski has hit the nail on the head. Drop the speed and raise the observation. Two years ago, we came out of a large supermarket to find at lease two inches of snow on the car park and more falling. 'How're we getting home in this?' was her question, 'Slowly and carefully.' was my answer. Don't slam on the brakes, use a higher gear and keep your eyes open, to avoid trouble.

The two comments above say it all, commonsense driving.

Winter tyres - its the way forward. It's about time the UK made them compulsory from November to March. I cannot praise these tyres enough. But saying that this will probably make all the idiots drive as fast in the snow and give them a false sense of security.
