BANGOR CITY will be hoping to make amends this weekend, as they prepare to welcome Llanelli to Farrar Road in their Welsh Cup third round tie, writes Tom Hughes.

In a repeat of last year's final, City will be hoping to inflict defeat on their full-time opponents, who denied Nev Powell's side the double last season.

The Citizens have another reason to be up for the clash, as they go into it on the back of a disappointing trip to Newtown which saw them return empty-handed.

Having climbed to the top of the Welsh Premier League before the Latham Park visit, City's 2-1 defeat will come as a reminder of the quality of opposition in Wales' top tier.

The hosts began the game confidently and took just seven minutes to take the lead, when a cross into the City box caused some unrest, letting Zac Evans to drill an effort beyond 'keeper Lee Idzi.

City chased an equaliser, but were unable to find the final pass, much to Powell's frustration.

Newtown continued to threaten Idzi's goal, and missed a gilt-edged chance to double their lead when Nick Rushton failed to find the target from close range, after Evans' initial shot struck the post and fell into his path.

Shortly after, City's Les Davies was put through one-on-one with 'keeper Nick Davies, only to direct his effort wide of the mark.

The Citizens began the second half with more attacking purpose, and were rewarded for their early pressure after Les Davies headed home unmarked from a Peter Hoy long throw.

City continued to threaten after the restart and nearly took the lead, first through Craig Garside and later Alan Bull, but could not find a way past 'keeper Davies.

The Blues eventually paid the ultimate price for their missed chances, as Robins' midfielder Gareth Partridge produced a moment of outstanding quality to unleash an unstoppable shot from 30-yards, to give his side an 81st minute lead.

They never gave up and staged a late rally, but the mid Wales outfit hung on for an unlikely victory that would knock City off their perch.
