All aboard for buses to return to Wrexham High Street

BUSES could return to Wrexham High Street from next spring.

Subject to the approval of council bosses, the half-hourly service will be operated by the authority on a six-month trial basis.

It would use a 19-seater vehicle to link the main public transport interchanges with shops in Regent Street, Hope Street, High Street, Queen’s Square and Eagles Meadow.

Services would run between 9.15am and 2.12pm Monday-Saturday and call at a number of existing stops along the route.

In the pedestrianised zone, buses would be restricted to 5mph and operate on a ‘hail and ride’ basis.

On Monday and Thursday the service would be diverted via Chester Road and Powell Road to avoid disrupting the outdoor markets held in Queen’s Square.

A report to be considered by a council committee on Wednesday says passenger fares – a single or all-day pass – would be set in line with commercial rates for adult tickets.

Concessionary fares would be accepted on the buses.

The re-introduction of the buses, which stopped running because of traffic problems, is one of a package of proposed measures aimed at breathing commercial life back into the heart of the town.

All have the strong support of local businesses, the Town Centre Forum and Wrexham Chamber of Trade.

The “buses back” scheme won 100 per cent support from everyone consulted about it.

Also winning widespread approval were separate plans to restrict parking on one side of High Street (100 per cent), simplifying existing access restrictions (75 per cent), reducing footway widths to allow wider parking bays (71 per cent) and relaxing access restrictions to allow loading at any time (66 per cent).

Proposals given the thumbs down included improving access to High Street for Blue Badge holders (75 per cent against), restricting access to vehicles during the evening (71 per cent against) and street stalls and events (75 per cent against).

Recommendations from scrutiny are due to go before board on December 23.

If approval is given it is expected the changes will come into effect in March.

OH Dear, where do I start? Buses in High didn't work the first around and nothing has changed, so why try it again. Has anyone holding a Blue Badge been asked what they think of these new proposals. Wrexham is dead but the council continally try to breathe life into the corpse, with the inevitable result - Nothing that makes any kind of sense.

Were the buses allowed in both directions Sandrobe or just one way. I didn't use the buses that stopped on High Street so I don't remember. Perhaps if they did a circular trip around it shouldn't cause too much congestion. I thought that the trouble with the buses was caused by the indiscriminate parking and buses travelling in both directions. I may well be wrong.

I have seen a mini transport system run on the same line as seaside resorts in Europe, a step on step off tram/train which runs in a circular route, fares are kept as low as possible, the service is used 7 days a week, its run by the local authority, not a transport company, Wrexham needs a good inner town transport system, if the fares are low enough it should be a great success.

I've got my very own mini transport system for getting around the Town centre and its also useful for getting there in the first place....commonly known as legs and feet they do wonders in transporting me to different place at no cost to me or the Council and are renowned for their durability and longevity

Ahhh the old shank's pony...... you have to think of the elderly in this though, only hope it works and fetches some trade back into the town centre.

This could be a positive move to get some life back into the town centre - perhaps the fares could be kept very low by making direct savings by reducing waste in other council areas. It would be better to have full busses charging a low fare than half full busses charging the commercail rate. After all the occupants whould probably be spending in the town centre shops.

Daisymay, I'm not absolutely sure but I seem to remember they were in both directions and it was this problem, plus the traffic getting in the way, everyone was glad to see the back of the buses. 'Once bitten, twice shy', I say!

If you read the report you'd see that it is a circular minibus that's operated by the council so no problems with buses passing on high street. It also proposes works to High Street to make it workable. Today in town was really busy so sandrobe2001 "corpse" is not very fair is it!
