YSBYTY Gwynedd’s accident and emergency department was closed for more than three hours after a hose pipe caused a leak.

A hospital spokesman said the ward was closed when water started leaking from the ceiling in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday, November 17).

The leak is believed to have been caused by a hose pipe in the endoscopy department above A&E, which had been left switched on.

The spokesman said: “We can confirm there was a leak in the emergency department of Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor.

“As a result the department was closed between 4am and 7.30am.

“Fortunately the department was relatively quiet, although procedures were in place to transfer patients.

“One patient had to be seen by a triage nurse in an ambulance and they were then admitted directly on to a ward.

“The leak caused water damage to ceiling tiles in the ward but the department has now fully reopened.

“The staff turned the situation round in three hours and we’re very proud of their efforts.”
