A NORTH Wales Assembly Member had an unusual visitor after undergoing an emergency operation in Africa.
Darren Millar, AM for Clwyd West, broke his ankle while visiting Cape Town in South Africa recently. While undergoing treatment, he was greeted by Nobel Peace Prize recipient Desmond Tutu.
Mr Millar said: “It was such a privilege to meet one of the most influential spiritual leaders in the world. Desmond Tutu played a pivotal role in the struggle against apartheid and helped to lay the foundations for the new South Africa we see today.
“He is a living legend and an inspiration to all.”
Desmond Tutu, former Archbishop of the Church of the Province of Southern Africa, is still a prominent human rights advocate who campaigns for freedom and tolerance.
Mr Millar was on a Commonwealth Parliamentary Association visit and suffered an injury during a boat trip to Robben Island, the notorious island prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for almost two decades.
He said: “I want to take this opportunity to thank all those well-wishers who have been in touch with kind messages of support for me and my family.
“I could not have received better care and attention than I did in South Africa but there is nothing like home to make you feel better. It is great to be back in Wales and on the road to recovery.
Mr Millar is now recovering at home after having an operation to fit a metal plate to repair his ankle.
He said: “It will obviously be some time before I make a full recovery but in the meantime my offices will continue to function as usual.”
