Rhyl 16 COBRA 19

Rhyl suffered their first defeat of the season at the Waen on Saturday in a top of the table clash with league leaders COBRA.

Despite a solid set piece, Rhyl’s forwards were always second best in loose play, and a mixture of poor discipline at the breakdown and a strangely lethargic defence saw them behind at the break due to three penaltys from the visitors against a penalty and drop goal from Rhodri Carlton Jones.

After some harsh words at half time from coach Jim Waring, the opening period of the half saw Rhyl pick up the pace and a further penalty from Carlton Jones, followed by a try from scrum half James Batey saw them take a slim lead into the final quarter.

But some poor discipline and decision making saw Cobra work their way back into the Rhyl 22, and after a prolonged period of pressure force their way over for the winning try.

Denbigh 35 Abergele 7

ABERGELE lost out in their derby clash with Denbigh at the weekend.

After going down to 14 men straight from the kick off, Gele were up against it in the early stages, going behind to two early converted tries and a penalty.

The Swordsmen struck back though, as a powerful rolling maul led to Gele reaching the Denbigh line before spreading the ball wide to Callum Mattock who crossed over, with Gareth Evans adding the extras.

But the try proved to be Abergele’s only score of the game, as two more penalties saw Denbigh go in 23-7 up at the break, before two more tries in the second half saw out the game.
