RHYL Rugby Club’s youth teams were in action over the weekend, with five junior sides crossing the whitewash.
Mixed Under 7s and 8s sides took part in a series of short matches against Denbigh, giving vital match-time to the club’s influx of youngsters, who ended up on the winning side more often than not.
The Under 10s were looking for a good performance after last week’s hard-fought win over Mold, but some strong running from the visiting Denbigh side saw them come out 19-5 winners, going two tries up in the first half.
Hope came early on in the second half when the outstanding Troy Billington scored from long range following some good forward play, but though James Fielding, Sol Williams and Twm Prys Jones led from the front, Denbigh scored a late try to seal the win.
Rhyl Under 12s made a flying start to their first match of the season against a tough Colwyn Bay side, with some quick thinking from Owen Jones seeing him take a quick penalty that left the Colwyn Bay defence standing still to score the first try of the match.
Jones crossed over for the second try soon after, but an end-to-end match saw Colwyn Bay get back into the contest. Abe Knightly worked hard with good support from his team to score the third try of the match, and Billy Alderson scored a very impressive try in the second half.
Matthew Vaughan was chosen as Rhyl`s player of the match.
The Under 16s also came close to toppling their Denbigh opponents, narrowly losing out 24-22.
A mixed Under 15s and 16s were evenly matched against their opponents, and fought back in the second half after going in 19-10 down, coming just short.
Rhyl Youth were also beaten by Denbigh in a tightly fought contest between to excellent forward packs.
The difference between the two sides came down to Denbigh’s ability to make the most of the few chances offered to them, though Rhyl did have the right to feel disappointed with the score line with two tries disallowed, ruling the ball had not been grounded over the try-line.
Tim Backs and Alexander Rowan both had excellent games in the forwards, whilst Damian Price and Louis Collinge were the pick of the back line.
