SIX men and six women from Prestatyn Running Club turned out in the Flintshire 10k at Mold, leaving the event with six individual and one team prize.

Pride of place went to Dean Longley, who had his best result to date when he finished second overall to Welsh international David Mountford.

Despite the wind which caused problems to all the competitors, Dean took 30 seconds off his personal best to finishing in 34min 30sec.

Other individual awards went to Eddie Naisby (1st M75), Leah Hughes (5th overall and 2nd senior lady), Sian Beck (3rd senior lady), Glenda Davies (1st L50) and Gill Brandrick, who won the L55 class after her recent move up into the new category.

The quartet of Leah, Sian, Katie Brandrick and Glenda also won the team prize.

The race also saw the return to competition after many years of former club vice-chairman Peter Blundell.

The placings were: Dean Longley (34min 30sec, 2nd); Paul Brandrick (44min 28sec, 71st); Leah Hughes (45min 31sec, 79th); John Hughes-Roberts (45min 55sec, 84th); Sian Beck (46min 49sec, 93rd); Katie Brandrick (47min 32sec, 101st); Glenda Davies (49min 13sec, 121st); Peter Blundell (50min 41sec, 141st); Eleri Jones (53min 10sec, 182nd); Duncan Longley (53min 43sec, 189th); Gill Brandrick (58min 41sec, 274th); Eddie Naisby (59min 55sec, 303rd)

Of the club’s five representatives in the Chester half-marathon, Sharon Jones probably had most reason to be delighted as she took a massive 18 minutes off her personal best, crossing the line in 4hrs 8min 36sec.

June Cooke placed seventh in the L55 category in 4hrs 46min 35sec and Jennie Martin clocked 5hrs 27min 50sec.

The two men had less happy outings. George Nicholls was on target to break the three-hour barrier but suffered severe cramp at 18 miles, exactly the same point as last year. He walked and jogged the rest, finishing in 3hrs 36min 1sec. Gareth Bailey also went through the first half in a decent 1hrs 40sec, but struggled in the closing stages to finish in 3hrs 58min 58sec.

This Sunday, the club hosts the first fixture in the Borders Road-Running League over the usual five-mile course on the promenade. There is an urgent need for marshals to help with the event, which starts at 11am.

Abergele Harriers

SUE Calvert lined up with over 9000 runners in Birkenhead Park on Sunday to take part in the Liverpool Marathon and raise money for the Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital.

Sue ran the 26 mile course around the city streets to cross the finish line at Liverpool's Pier Head in 5hrs 40min 52sec.

Darren Blazier was the only Harrier competing in the Flintshire 10k on Sunday finishing in 35min 39sec for sixth position overall.
