A COUPLE have spoken of their heartbreak after their baby boy was left brain damaged during birth.

Ten-week-old Kaiden Williams, from Connah’s Quay, suffered brain damage due to complications during his birth at Glan Clwyd Hospital.

His parents, Sian, 27, and Paul, 31, now face the worrying wait to find out just how seriously he will be affected.

“Kaiden had a bad time when he was born,” said Sian.

“He was in special care for two weeks and couldn’t breathe on his own.”

Sian encountered problems with her placenta during birth and had to have an emergency Caesarean.

Kaiden remained at Glan Clwyd for a fortnight until he could breathe and was allowed home.

A scan has shown the ordeal has left little Kaiden brain damaged, but doctors say it is too early to know just how badly it will affect him.

“It was a real shock,” said Sian. “We felt angry and upset but it’s nobody’s fault and he’s doing really well.

“It’s just one of those unfortunate things.”

Doctors will assess Kaiden at each of the key milestones he is supposed to reach by certain ages, such as walking and talking, to try to establish how badly his brain was damaged.

“He’s doing really well,” said Sian. “He’s happy and he’s gorgeous.

“He can do moving and sucking already, it’s just the major things now.

“We are worried but I think we’ve accepted it and now he’s just our little baby.

Whatever happens we’ll be here for him.”

And now the family have completed a charity challenge in aid of the special care baby unit at Glan Clwyd Hospital.

Paul and 13 friends completed a sponsored walk up Snowdon to thank the nurses who helped baby Kaiden.

“Paul’s sister came up with the idea because the staff had been so good,” said Sian. “The staff were brilliant. The nurses are amazing – I don’t know how they do it on a daily basis.”

The sponsored walk has raised about £3,000 so far and Sian and Paul are encouraging anyone else who wants to donate to do so through Cuddles, the charity which raises money for the special care baby unit at Glan Clwyd Hospital.
