Rhyl & District got their surprise promotion to Division 2 of the North West League off to a stunning start by toppling newly-relegated Division 1 heavyweights Colwyn Bay 2-1 in their opening match at St Asaph.

Expecting to stay put after finishing a disappointed third on goal difference last season before it was realised that the changed configuration allowed three to move up, Rhyl rose to the tough challenge with a gritty team performance.

After a blank first half, Rhyl swept in front with two goals in the space of two minutes early in the second half, Gavin Davies unleashing a blistering shot to break the deadlock after a smart interception, before returning ex-Rhyl ace John Lovegrove signalled his welcome comeback after a six year gap in Bristol, with a swift second from a Chris Hardy pass into space.

Colwyn Bay mounted relentless pressure which brought them back into contention with 10 minutes to go but backs-to-the-wall Rhyl, with Danny Bell and Jeff Hodgkinson outstanding in midfield, held them off to give new captain Charlie Garnett a notable first victory under his leadership.

Now Garnett will be hoping for a successful follow-up when Rhyl visit Prescot this Saturday.

RHYL Ladies’ hockey team hosted a visit by last season’s champions Newtown on Saturday.

It was a very defensive game for Rhyl as Newtown pressed high up the pitch into the Rhyl half.

Newtown struck twice before the break going into half time 2-0 up.

Despite the scoreline Rhyl kept their spirits high as they emerged from the break.
They made a few chances but like last week failed to score.

Newtown meanwhile kept pressing leaving Rhyl’s defence to work hard making some great interceptions and lovely saves from player of the match Faye Turpin in goal.

But Newtown managed to get another three goals before the final whistle.

Next game is on October 8 at home to Dysynni, when Rhyl will be playing in pink for this as the club is supporting Breast Cancer Awareness month.
