VILLAGERS are set to raise the rafters in a bid to save a church under threat.

Rhuddlan residents are planning to record a CD and publish a program for a fundraising concert called Rhuddlan Connect which takes place in aid of St Mary’s Church.

Former vicar, Peter Allwsorth who recently retired, said the church faces a growing debt of more than £10,000 to the St Asaph Diocese.

He said: “St Mary’s is facing massive financial problems, and they have to be resolved.

“They have also just had their fifth yearly inspection, which indicated there may be a need for considerable further expenditure for the building.”

It is hoped the concert, which will feature choral pieces, solo singers and the vocal talents of young villagers will provide a funding boost to help  supporters pay off some of the backlog.

Brenda Taylor of the Rhuddlan Environment Group, which has arranged the concert, said: “In November we will be doing a pop concert to raise even more funds toward helping out. After all, even if you don't go to church, at sometime you will use the church for either births, marriages or deaths. Plus the elderly members in our community love the church, we respect them and wish to help them.”

The group already has a backing track, a full loan of equipment and a technical advisor, student Nick Lee from Bangor University, as well as support from Beavers, Cubs, Rainbows, Brownies and Guides.

Mrs Taylor said: “We hope to produce 300 cds packaged free with a programme, which we will sell for funds. We will do a live recording of the concert in the church itself.”

The concert takes place at 6.15pm on November 28 and entry tickets cost £3.
