A BABY seal had to be rescured from a beach - twice.

The grey seal, which has been named Jakey, is now being cared for by staff at the Welsh Mountain Zoo after getting trapped in rocks next to St Trillo church on Thursday morning.

The pup, which was no more than a few days old, was freed again after its mother failed to return for it.

Michelle Pywell, head zookeeper, took part in the rescue after receiving calls from Rhos on Sea residents who heard Jakey’s cries for help.

She said: “The gap between the rocks was too small to fit him through, but I went down into a gap on the other side and found that there was more room.

“By then we had a crowd of people watching with their dogs, and we used one of their flexi-leads to get him out.

“We told everyone about it and asked them to leave him alone so that the mother could return for him, but a few hours later we got another call saying he’d been washed back into the rocks.

Jakey is now building up his strength on a special fish paste diet by zoo keepers, who will then teach him to eat whole fish in around a month’s time.

Keepers will continue to monitor the pup’s progress, and are aiming to return him to the sea in the new year.
