REVIEW: Old Black Tattoo ready to rock!

NORTH Wales rockers Old Black Tattoo are bringing a dose of classic rock to the coast with their debut EP out now.

Hailing from Mostyn, Rhyl and St Asaph, the quartet are all current and former pupils at Ysgol Glan Clwyd, and have spent the last 12 months making the transition from the rehearsal room to the live stage.

With plenty of gigs across Denbighshire and Flintshire under their belt, the band are stretching their fanbase with shows set for Wrexham next month and their self-titled four-track EP currently available.

Opener Liar's Wings sets the tone for the release - a catchy-riff which descends into a tight rock offering as Karl Harvey's raspy vocals drawl over Josh Oldfield's fat bass.

Escape keeps the vintage feel going with a sound akin to Black Sabbath soaked in early Queens Of The Stone Age with Dylan Tatum's hangbang-able drum work a carefully crafted ingredient in the well performed track.

That One Thing lifts the tempo a tad, with a mid-section break demonstrating the musical prowess of guitarist Charlie Blackie sure to be a crowd-pleaser on stage; before closer Leeches continues the amalgamation of 70s, 90s and modern rock into a full rock offering.

Old Black Tattoo's first recording is not only a triumph of pure rock, but with it's stripped back, basic sound void of pitch-shifting annoyance and studio bells and whistles, it also deems them an essential band to see live - surely a group to watch out for.
