HEADTEACHERS from schools across Gwynedd and Anglesey have praised pupils for their GCSE results.

Pupils received results across the regions today, with the percentage achieving grades A*- C in Gwynedd higher than the national average.

The figure stood at 70.5 per cent, compared with the national average of 66.5 per cent.

The number achieving grades A* and A was also higher at 20.8 per cent, compared to the national figure of 19.5 per cent.

Neil Foden, headteacher at Ysgol Friars in Bangor, said the results were probably the school’s best ever.

“We are very pleased,” he said.

“There were an awful lot of happy young people, some of them were literally bouncing out the door.

“Our full set of results are not in but it may well become our best ever.

“It’s lovely to see the hard work that teachers and pupils have put in together.

“We are anticipating a very large number coming back for sixth form.”

The school’s successes included Harriet Hall, Leon Scrace, and Felix Jackson, who all achieved nine A*s, two As and one B.

Gareth Isfryn Hughes, headteacher at Ysgol Tryfan in Bangor, was also delighted with his school’s results.

He said: “There are some outstanding sets of results this year and I am proud of all the pupils who have performed so well.

“This has led to the highest ever percentage of year 11 pupils requesting to come back to the sixth form.”

Among the the successes were Sara Edwards, who achieved 11 A* grades, Marged Wiliam, who achieved nine A* and two A grades and Lois Glyn Roberts, who achieved seven A* and four A grades.

In Anglesey, Dr Brian Jones, headteacher at Ysgol David Hughes in Menai Bridge, praised the hard work of pupils, teachers and parents.

“The pupils have achieved or fulfilled the targets we set for them,” he said.

“Not a single pupil has left our school without a qualification.

“We’re delighted with that.”

One of the high flyers was Sion Withers, who achieved an impressive 11 A*s and one GCSE short course A*.

Figures in Anglesey remained constant, with the number of pupils gaining grades A*- C just below the national average at 64.9 per cent.

The number of pupils achieving A* or A grades fell from last year to 16.9 per cent, however the figures did not include the growing number of pupils succeeding in vocational courses on the Island.
