A BODY found in the sea off Anglesey yesterday has been identified as that of a missing 22-year-old man.

North Wales Police have confirmed that the body is that of Callum MacKay, from Llanfairpwll, who got into difficulty last Wednesday, in waters at Porth Trescastell, near Rhosneigr.

Callum’s friend, Lewis Darroch, also 22 from Valley, went into the sea to help him but also got into difficulty.

Coastguards were called and Lewis was pulled from the water by the RAF search and rescue helicopter.

He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Ysbyty Gwynedd while searches for Callum continued until Thursday evening.

Yesterday, police confirmed that a body of a man had been recovered from the water.

Formal identification today has confirmed that the body is that of Callum MacKay.

Callum’s mum, Ann, paid tribute to her son last week, who she described as “very special” and “a very kind boy, beautiful in looks and spirit.”

The Darroch family also paid tribute to Lewis, who recently graduated with a degree in philosophy from Lancaster University.

In a statement they described the former Ysgol Friars pupil as an “inspiring, committed and passionate individual with a wide group of friends.”

They added: “His passions ranged from an eclectic range of music to photography and sports, especially climbing.

“He had a great love of the North Wales countryside, both the mountains and rivers of Snowdonia and the beaches and cliffs of Anglesey.

“However, possibly his greatest enjoyment was the time he could spend with his friends sorting out the problems of the world and life.

"He was a wonderful person, full of life, and his family, friends and particularly his sister Katie and his long term girlfriend Hannah will miss him greatly.

“Our thoughts are also very much with Callum’s family at this very difficult time for both families.”

Rhosneigr councillor, Richard Dew, said the local community was still in shock.
“It is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts go to both families,” he said.
