RHYL Carnival celebrated its 120th anniversary in style with one of the biggest community events the town has ever seen.
Organisers of the annual festival of fun presided one of the most memorable carnivals in recent history.
Gill Parry, Rhyl Carnival Treasurer, described Sunday’s event as “fantastic” despite overcast conditions.
“It was the busiest showfield we have had and the biggest parade we have had in years,” said Mrs Parry.
She put the increased numbers of spectators who turned out to enjoy a mix of competitions, displays stalls and children’s entertainment, down to three years of investment in attractions on the Rhyl Leisure Centre fields on Tynewydd Road, which Rhyl Carnival moved top only three years ago together with enthusiasm from people for a low-cost and local day out.
“We have been building on the number of attractions on the site for three years now and it has paid off,” she said. “There were 1,000 people on the field and we had lots more stalls than we usually do.”
The traditionally colourful parade left from Quay Street at 1pm winding its way along Rhyl Promenade before finishing up at The Pavilion Theatre Car Park.
Mrs Parry wished to thank everyone involved with organising Rhyl Carnival 2011 in particular the police and a 12-strong team from Rhyl Air Cadets who helped erect gazebos and stalls from 8am to 6pm.
She said: “I just cannot thank them enough. All of them were under 18 and were a credit to their generation.”
She added that work on next year’s carnival would get underway next month with the treasurer forecasting another big event coinciding with Olympics 2012
celebrations and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
