THE 2011 JUNIOR Merit Tournament brought some of the hottest prospects from the Colwyn Bay and Llandudno Bowling League to Eirias Park last week.

An afternoon of high quality bowls led to Rhos Park’s Matthew Jones defending his title with a final victory over Penrhyn New Hall’s Robert Parry.

Jones triumphed in the semi-final against Penmaenmawr’s Steffan Williams, whilst Parry booked his final place with victory over Harry Lawton, also of Rhos Park.

League President Tommy Roberts presented all entrants with a momento of the tournament, as well as handing over the winners shield to Matthew Jones, who also won last year’s tournament.

Any players wishing to have a go at playing bowls, whether adult or junior should approach their local bowling green where they will be made most welcome.

Colwyn and Llandudno District League Cup Final

CRAIG Y DON Bowling Club won the Colwyn and Llandudno District League Cup recently by just one point over Colwyn Bay British Legion.

The final, hosted at Dwygyfylchi BC, saw the Llandudno side triumph in a well contested 199-198 final, taking the trophy despite a three point handicap disadvantage to their Colwyn Bay opponents.

Craig y Don took an early lead with wins from Bryn Hughes, Daniel Jones and Alan Davies putting them 80-66 ahead after four games, with John Crowl pulling one back for the Legion.

CBRBL’s Chris Slater and Pat Bird of Craig y Don won their respective games, before the Bay side staged a late comeback with wins from Mark Lawton and Steve Barron, with Anthony Harper performing well against Geraint Jones to make things finely poised at 172-165 going into the final game.

Terry Lea took a 20-13 lead against Gareth Williams to put Colwyn Bay back in contention, but some superb play from the Craig y Don man saw him fight back to 20-16, before securing the trophy with an expertly flighted bowl.
