Colwyn Bay 189 all out
Leigh 193-4
Leigh won by four wickets
A MONUMENTAL ninth wicket stand by skipper Graeme Jones and youngster Arthur Jones not out was not enough to save Colwyn Bay from their third consecutive defeat at the weekend, as they were overtaken by victors Leigh in the Liverpool Competition Premier League.
The mix of experience and youth scored 40 and 31 respectively to pump up an otherwise lacklustre Bay scoreline, as they finished on 189 all out.
Kiwi Mike Bates chipped in with 37 and opener Dave Taylor scored 29 on a tough day at the drizzle-affected Penrhyn Avenue crease.
Taylor struck six fours in his 29 runs, whilst professional Bates smashed three fours and a six to help the scoreline to 129 for seven.
After the turn-around, Bates and Paul Jenkins did the bulk of the bowling with Arthur Jones catching opener Andrew Batterley for 21.
Leigh were reduced to 65 for four, but Lancashire pro Karl Brown, who scored 104, and Tom Foster could not be separated as Leigh reached their 193 total in 39 overs. Bates and Jenkins both took two for 53, with the Bay looking to get back on track next week with a trip to face Bootle.
Seconds regain top place
COLWYN BAY Seconds meanwhile went back on top of the Liverpool Competition Seconds First Division with a decisive 76 run win against Wigan, with Dafydd Rhys leading the way with 85 to add to his previous Saturday's century.
Rhys was backed up by Simon Kipps (49) and James Jones (29) as the home side posted 205 for five in 40 overs.
Jones rounded off a superb display by taking three four 26, whilst Arthur Jones went one better with four for 30 as Wigan were bowled out for 129, as the Bay took all 25 points from the clash.
The win got the Bay back on track after losing to Leigh seconds on Saturday, despite another big score from Kipps, who hammered 52 including four fours and three sixes.
A reshuffled Bay posted 152 from their innings, but crumbled for 20 for four before Ethan Ray (38) and James Jone (32) combined to take the score to 62 before Kipps’ half century.
Leigh however had too much for their visitors, beating the total with four batsmen to spare, despite Nick Woodward taking three wickets.
