A LINK between young and old has bloomed into a green garden initiative.

Emrys Ap Iwan pupils from Abergele built a new greenhouse for residents at a local Sheltered Housing Scheme after storms earlier in the year bought the last greenhouse crashing down.

Collette Ryan, Ysgol Emrys ap Iwan Inclusion Centre manager said: “The pupils are always keen to work with the local community and to be seen in making a difference. They are looking forward to doing any other projects in the future.”

Residents at Pentre Mawr, which is managed by Clwyd Alyn Housing Association were able to purchase a special greenhouse wide enough to allow wheelchair access thanks to a grant from GwirVol, a partnership supporting and promoting youth volunteering in Wales.

The pupils helped install the greenhouse, painted it and planted new vegetables alongside the residents.

They were also assisted by builder George Williams who came along to help.

Alison Pring, warden of Pentre Mawr Park, said: “The residents would like to say a huge thank you to all involving in securing the funding for the new greenhouse, and to the young people from the school who been brilliant helping to set it up and get the Pentre Mawr gardening club going again.

“It was great to see the young people getting on so well with the residents and having so much in common. We look forward to them visiting again, they were a real credit to the school and the area.”
